Dear Fresher Me

Hey!

I've seen recently on social media #DearFresherMe, which is people talking about what they would have told themselves when they first started University. I thought it would be a good idea to write what I would tell myself an anyone else in their first year of University.

1. Don't stress that you won't make friends- Because you're a living at home student you're worrying you won't meet any friends. Turns out you will! Everyone is in the same boat of being a new place with no friends and you'll meet people on your course and make friends through other people's friends.

2. Do more during Freshers Week- You end up doing 1 or 2 things during Freshers. Do more!! This is the time to establish friendship groups and celebrate getting into Uni. You have a lot of fun in the things you did do and you could've done more if you said yes to more events!

3. Sign Up To Societies- You don't sign up to any societies and it is a missed opportunity. The dance society run tap dancing and you could've got back into that. Rather than make excuses as to why you don't sign up to things, just be brave and go for it.

4. Don't just run straight out the door after lectures!- You're the last one in Uni and the first one out. Why? Spend some time chatting to friends, go to the Student Union and have a drink. It will make going to University more enjoyable rather than somewhere you HAVE to be.

5. Hang out with your friends more- Linked to number 4, hang out with friends more! You make amazing, incredible friends in first year and it would've been awesome to see them more.

6. It's okay to miss lectures/seminars- If you're feeling exhausted, under pressure and stressed out it is alright to miss some lectures and seminars. Don't feel guilty. We all need a break and you won't learn if you can't pay attention.

7. Don't get so upset over exams and assignments- First year seems extremely stressful and of course you want to do your best, but at the end of the day first year barely counts in your overall grade. Yes it is hard, but the real difficulty comes in second and third year. Chill out a bit more about exams and assignments because the harder work that is worth more comes later.

What would you tell Fresher you?
